Annual. Culms tufted, erect or geniculately ascending, 30-100 cm long. Leaf blades linear or linear-lanceolate, flat, finely acuminate, 8-20 cm x 5-8 mm, upper surface scabrid, lower surface glabrous or sparsely pilose; leaf sheaths compressed, top and margin pilose with tubercle-based spreading hairs; ligule membranous, ca. 1 mm long, lacerate. Inflorescence open, elliptic or oblong in outline, 15-25 cm long, composed of several (up to 35), slender, ascending, secund racemes scattered along a central axis; racemes 3-12(-19) cm long, straight or flexuous, ascending, solitary or in clusters of 2-5, with spikelets alternate and imbricate in 2 rows on one side of rachis; rachis scabrid, disarticulating between the florets. Spikelets 1-2 mm long, shortly pedicelled, glaucous-green or purplish green, elliptic, laterally compressed, 2-4-flowered, occasionally 1-flowered. Glumes subequal, oblong-lanceolate, acute, 1-nerved, keeled, scabrid along keel, persistent; lower glume 0.9-1.4 mm long, apex acuminate; upper glume longer, 1.1-1.6 mm long. Lemmas as long as upper glume or slightly shorter, broadly elliptic-oblong, obtuse, apiculate, 3-nerved, nerves pilose. Palea as long as the lemma, 2-keeled, keels pilose. Lodicules 2. Stamens 3. Caryopsis elliptic.
